Local man robs gas station for cigarettes

May 1—PROCTORVILLE, Ohio — A man claiming to be a spiritual being is behind bars after robbing a Speedway Wednesday, taking off with a carton of cigarettes.

Steven Baldwin, 40, of Proctorville, appeared at the Speedway on State Route 7 at approximately 5:19 a.m. with a baseball bat threatening a store employee while claiming to be Jesus, according to police.

Baldwin then fled the scene, making his way about 200 yards where village officer Aaron Hicks apprehended him, officer Steven Woodyard said.

Baldwin was transported to the Lawrence County Jail where he is charged with aggravated robbery — a first-degree felony.

The Daily Independent reached out to the Speedway for comment, but employees declined the offer to speak.
