Local family raising money to help get big sister a liver

SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — A local family took to GoFundMe intending to raise money to give their sister, who has stage four liver failure, a new liver.

According to GoFundMe, 24-year-old Emily Smith is in dire need of a liver transplant after several tests and scans revealed she was suffering from liver failure. Before she can undergo a liver transplant the Methodist Hospital Specialty and Transplant in San Antonio will need $300,000. The family hopes their loved one can receive this surgery in the next month so she can live a happy and normal life again.

An update posted on the website on March 5 shared the family is waiting for a response from insurance and to see if the hospital will take Smith on as a patient.

“We are staying in good spirit and we are confident they will take her in due to her young age,” the update reads.

Doctors have started the evaluation process and shared Smith will need a full liver transplant, however, funds are still needed for the transplant to be done. Smith will be placed on the donor list.

As of the publication of this article, $7,450 of the $300,000 goal has been raised. To see the GoFundMe “Liver for Big Sister: A Race Against Time”, click here.
