Local Decatur Bar-B-Q restaurant wins southern cookoff competition

DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) — A local Decatur Bar-B-Q restaurant, known by many for inventing ‘Alabama white sauce,’ is bringing home another trophy for their case.

‘Big Bob’ Gibson Bar-B-Q won first place in the pork shoulder category of Memphis in May’s World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest (WCBCC).

There were 28 teams in the shoulder division. ‘Big Bob’ received a final score of 572.38 points, 1.63 points over the second-place winner. They also received third place in the Kingsford Tour of Champions division, the ‘people’s choice’ of the WCBCC.

This win adds to the long list of accomplishments for the restaurant. In 2023, Food Network named ‘Big Bob’ Gibsons the top Bar-B-Q place in Alabama. At previous WCBCCs, ‘Big Bob’s Gibsons has won five Grand Championships: 2017, 2014, 2011, 2003 and 2000.
