Local community colleges, DHR team up to provide summer jobs for students

MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. (WHNT) — Some local community colleges and the Alabama Department of Human Resources (DHR) are teaming up to provide summer jobs to students.

As part of the Summer Youth Employment Program, Northwest Shoals Community College (NWSCC) and Calhoun Community College are two of several Alabama community colleges partnering with DHR to provide part-time positions at their campuses.

NWSCC said they hope to employ up to 30 students in part-time positions at the Phil Campbell and Shoals campuses through the program.

Students will be placed with supervisors in various departments such as student services, athletics, maintenance and more. Organizers say that eligibility for employment through the program is not dependent on NWSCC enrollment.

Calhoun Community College also has employment opportunities available at its Huntsville and Decatur campuses. Positions at Calhoun’s campuses will include clerical and technical roles, as well as general support and event planning.

The program will start at both community colleges on June 1 and continue through July 31. Students who take part in the program will be paid $10 an hour for up to 20 hours per week.

Those who are eligible to participate must be between age 16 and 24 and have a household income that meets the 2024 Federal Poverty Guidelines. Those guidelines consider gross annual income and the size of the family unit.

Students employed by the program have the opportunity to receive work experience, as well as acquire life and job skills. They will learn time management, dependability and the importance of working as a team with others.
