Local authorities talk DWI prevention for Super Bowl weekend

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — Local law enforcement officials promise a heavier than normal presence on local streets and highways throughout Super Bowl weekend.

“There will be extra patrols out, so people should be aware of that kind of as a fair warning. Law enforcement in general is going to have extra personnel out there, they’re going to be specifically looking for drunk drivers,” said Sheriff William Schrom, of Chemung County Sheriff’s Office. “Which is all the more incentive to make sure that you have a plan before you leave wherever you are.”

“During the game is definitely a time that we would monitor the roads with extra DWI patrols during the day and evening, but also after the game is over is when I would say to be most careful,” said Sgt. Brad Morrell, Village of Elmira Heights Police Department.

If you host a party and someone drives under the influence and causes an accident, you can be held responsible under New York law.

According to Undersheriff, Douglas Houper, of Chemung County Sheriff’s Office, “If you’re hosting a party, and you allow an intoxicated driver to leave your house and a tragedy occurs, you will be on the hook for a civil liability for allowing that person to leave your house while they’re intoxicated.”

In addition, make sure to eat enough food to absorb the alcohol. Drinking on an empty stomach can cause you to get drunk quickly. Officer Morrell suggests drinking water when you decide you’re done watching the game or when your evening is over to help alleviate any alcohol in your system.
