ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – When it comes to NCAA Tournament projections, Richard Pitino’s UNM Lobos have been solidly in, close to not being, last four in, and according to the latest bracketology from Joe Lunardi at ESPN, the last four out. The Lobos can get off the rollercoaster ride and solidly place themselves in the field with victories at the Mountain West Tournament, starting Wednesday.

The Lobos lost a heartbreaker, at then 22 ranked Utah State, last weekend and as a result, find themselves as the number 6 seed in the tournament, instead of number three. They have a play-in game against an 11-seed Air Force Falcons team that dealt the Lobos a blow to their NCAA Tournament hopes with a one-point upset at The Pit last month. “That loss certainly stung,” said UNM head coach Richard Pitino. “We didn’t really have a bunch of bad losses. But, I would say, for anybody watching Air Force, they’re getting better and better, they really are. I know their record may not show it but, when I watch them, I know it’s going to be a tough game.”

Should the Lobos get past Air Force, they will have a Boise State Broncos team that swept them this year waiting in the quarterfinals. The Lobos and Air Force Falcons play at 5 pm on Wednesday.
