‘We live with this, we see it daily:’ Resident calls for change after deadly high-speed crash in 35 mph Las Vegas neighborhood

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – A Las Vegas homeowner is calling for change after police said an impaired driver caused a deadly high-speed head-on collision in the west valley.

Brandi Mumford told 8 News Now she wished she could unsee, what she saw.

“When everybody got here, the fire truck had put her down on the ground and started trying to administer CPR and then they put the white sheet over her,” Mumford said.

The two-car crash happened on Sunday at around 9 p.m. on Lake Mead Boulevard near Rancho Drive and Decatur Boulevard. It marked the 35th traffic death in the Las Vegas Metro Police Department’s jurisdiction so far this year.

It may seem like just numbers, but the crashes have shattered lives and they have created fear among residents.

“We just need something done. We have families here that won’t even let out their kids to play because of how bad this street is,” Mumford said.

Las Vegas Metro police accuse Angel Bello-Martinez, 18, of speeding westbound on Lake Mead Boulevard in a Toyota Scion, and veering into the eastbound lane, colliding with a Honda Civic.

Sashiana Rossotti was behind the wheel of the Honda. Her passenger, a 62-year-old woman, was killed, police said.

“I felt really bad for the daughter because that could’ve been anybody. You know, we live with this. We see it daily now,” Mumford said.

The speed limit on that road where Mumford lives is 35 miles per hour. Her concerns include a lack of speed limit signs in the area.

Las Vegas Metro police accuse Bello-Martinez of being high when he was speeding.

“Drivers, you are not allowed to consume marijuana and drive. It is a DUI. You are not allowed to consume marijuana if you are under 21 years old. Please, help. Save a life, even if it is yours,” LVMPD Sgt. Richard Rundell said in a video posted on X.

Bello-Martinez faces a charge of DUI resulting in death and a charge of reckless driving resulting in death.

According to Las Vegas Metro police, Rossotti is currently listed in critical condition. Bello-Martinez is also listed as critical.
