5 hurt after Toyota Camry driver hits 2 tractor trailers in construction zone following high-speed chase on I-4

POLK COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — Five people were hurt after a Toyota Camry driver crashed in an active construction zone following a high-speed on Interstate 4 early Friday.

The Florida Highway Patrol said it spotted a Toyota Camry driver traveling at 102 mph on I-4 near mile marker 35 just before midnight.

Troopers said they tried to pull over the Camry, but the driver fled at speeds up to 130 mph.

The FHP said the driver continued until reaching an active construction zone near mile marker 27, where all but the left lane was closed off.

According to troopers, the driver entered the closed portion of the road and collided with two tractor-trailers parked in the construction zone.

The FHP said the Camry broke into several pieces. Two men, a 37-year-old from Tampa and a 30-year-old from Port Charlotte, were ejected from the car and suffered serious injuries.

Two tractor-trailer drivers and a Subaru Outback driver suffered minor injuries. The FHP said parts of the Camry hit the Subaru driver’s vehicle as they drove by the crash.
