Fiery wrong-way crash shuts down ramp between I-4 and Selmon Expy. in Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Tampa’s crosstown connector between the Selmon Expressway and Interstate-4 is back open after a crash caused several hours of delays on Thursday.

The collision happened in the northbound lanes just before 9 a.m., according to the Florida Highway Patrol FHP).

Aerial footage from Eagle 8 HD showed a heavily damaged pickup truck, that was missing its bed, wedged in a gap between two concrete barriers.

According to FHP, a Dodge pickup was heading north when the driver pulled a U-turn and started driving the wrong way in the southbound lanes. After colliding with the wall, the truck split in half. The back half of the truck ended up in another lane, on the other side of the barrier, several feet away.

The truck caught fire as a result of the collision and debris was scattered across the entire roadway. The blaze scorched the side of a beam housing SunPass scanners and cameras.

The driver, identified as a 41-year-old man from St. Petersburg, was taken to the hospital with critical injuries.

The ramp reopened to traffic at around 12:30 p.m.
