Jackson County Executive Frank White announced Tuesday that he had contracted COVID-19, but dealing with the mild symptoms wasn’t his only challenge. Four candidates — three Republicans and a fellow Democrat — were vying this Election Day to end White’s six-years-plus reign as county executive.

Meanwhile, nearly two dozen other candidates on both sides of the partisan aisle were competing for seats on the county legislature.

That’s more candidates than most years, perhaps due to the fact that so many incumbents have chosen to retire their seats. Come January’s swearing-in ceremony, at least five of the nine legislators will be newcomers.

But it could be more. Only two out of the four seeking re-election was without one or more opponents in Tuesday’s primary. And one of the two without a primary race is assured of having a competitor in November.
