Firefighter hospitalized after brush fire rekindles at Mosaic plant in Riverview

RIVERVIEW, Fla. (WFLA) — A brush fire that threatened the Mosaic phosphate plant in Riverview on Monday started back up again Tuesday, according to Hillsborough County Fire Rescue (HCFR).

A HCFR firefighter was transported to the hospital and is in stable condition. Officials did not provide any additional details.

Mosaic employees return to work after crews put out massive brush fire

A HCFR spokesperson said a polyethylene pipe caught fire, requiring crews to use foam to contain it. Flames spread to a second pipe as they extinguished the first one.

The blaze does not threaten the plant, as crews worked to protect the structure on Monday. The wind is helping carry the flames to the east, which is in the opposite direction.

The breezy conditions allowed the fire to spread quickly after it started for the first time.

Mosaic sprayed down the property overnight to reduce the risk of the brush fire rekindling, but there were some hot spots that officials missed due to the size of the affected area.

32 crews responded to the plant on Tuesday. HCFR announced the fire was extinguished and firefighters were working to put out the remaining hot spots.

The fire department will set up a fire watch to keep an eye on conditions at the plant.
