TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — On Wednesday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and quarterback Baker Mayfield will speak to the media after agreeing to terms on a new contract.

The Bucs made it clear they wanted quarterback Baker Mayfield back for the 2024 season and beyond, so it came as no surprise when reports surfaced of Mayfield and the Bucs agreeing to terms on a new three-year deal worth $100 million.

“Baker is the ultimate competitor and has demonstrated strong leadership and resilience on the field over his six-year career,” said Buccaneers General Manager Jason Licht. “He set the tone for our success last season through his grit and determination and his unwavering commitment to his teammates. Our entire team feeds off the energy and passion that Baker brings, and he will play a key role in continuing to build off the winning culture that has been established here. We are all looking forward to seeing Baker build off last year’s success as we continue our pursuit of winning another Super Bowl.”

“It’s always great to be able to extend a player and a person of Baker’s caliber,” said Buccaneers Head Coach Todd Bowles. “Baker is the epitome of what we look for in a player: he’s tough, strong-willed, competitive, resilient, and elevates the people around him. He is a thoughtful and genuine teammate who will do anything to help the team win. He was a huge part of our success during the 2023 season, and we look forward to having him continue to lead our offense into the future.”

Mayfield was one of four big free-agent re-signings for the Bucs as the team looks to keep their core intact. Tampa Bay also signed star wide receiver Mike Evans to a two-year, $52 million contract, brought back longtime Buc Lavonte David on a one-year, $10 million deal, and placed the franchise tag on All-Pro safety Antoine Winfield Jr.

That doesn’t mean Tampa Bay is content to run it back with the same squad of veterans that led them to the postseason in 2023. Earlier this offseason, Tampa released veteran linebacker Shaq Barrett, who will reportedly take his talents to Miami, and traded cornerback Carlton Davis to the Detroit Lions for a 3rd round draft pick.

The Bucs, who hold the 26th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, may also look to bring in value free agent signings in the second wave of free agency, a move Licht has found success with in previous years.
