Lithuania and Poland commenced the joint tactical exercise "Narsus Grifonas 24/II" (Brave Griffin 24/II) on April 21, focusing on defense strategies within the Suwalki Gap, Lithuanian news outlet LRT reported.

The exercises, which involve troops from the United States and Portugal, are set to run through April 25. Concurrently, the U.S. Armed Forces are conducting the Saber Strike exercises elsewhere in Lithuania.

The Suwalki Gap, a critical 100-kilometer-long border area between Lithuania and Poland, is strategically significant due to its proximity to Russia's Kaliningrad Oblast to the west and Belarus to the east.

Tensions in the region have been heightened by comments from Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko, who, in late September, discussed with his military the possibility of an attack on what is formally known as the Suwalki Corridor. Lukashenko criticized Lithuania and Poland for their stance on the corridor, accusing them of "waffling on" about its strategic importance.
