Lithium-ion battery vacuum blamed for DC apartment fire

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Emergency workers said a vacuum cleaner that was charging was responsible for starting a fire in Northeast Tuesday afternoon.

DC Fire and EMS first posted about the fire in the 200 block of Florida Ave. NE at 3:31 p.m. The post on the X platform said that the fire was in a sixth floor apartment and that a sprinkler contained the fire.

A follow-up post said that a lithium-ion battery was involved, noting: “Fires ignited by these batteries are becoming more frequent. Knock-off charging devices are a common cause.”

At 4:24 p.m., DC Fire and EMS gave more specifics, saying that a vacuum cleaner powered by a lithium-ion battery caught fire while it was charging. The post, which included pictures, said: “Can’t stress enough to only use charging device that comes with device, not to overcharge, & never charge where it will impede escape.”
