Lisa Schroeder, the 2024 Remarkable Woman

Editor’s Note: March was Women’s History Month. Each Tuesday during March, KOIN 6 News spotlighted a Remarkable Woman nominated by others in the community.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Throughout March, KOIN 6 News spotlighted 4 truly inspirational women, nominated by others to be this region’s Remarkable Woman of 2024.

Elle Harris of Sherwood started her own company, Harris Excavation, and offers a chance for women in the Coffee Creek Correctional Facility to learn a skill with heavy machinery. She also helped clean up after the 2020 Oregon wildfires and used her equipment to help those in Lahaina after the Hawaiian wildfires in 2023. Harris is on the Sherwood Police Foundation and works with ALS Northwest.

Montserrat Andreys began Hey Doc, a chiropractic clinic in Southeast Portland that focuses on the specific needs of the BIPOC and queer and transgender communities. She is also a flamenco dancer in her spare time.

Gloria Fluker began as a probation and parole officer, then dove into the world of helping underserved young women thrive. She earned a master’s degree in counseling, founded “Youth Unlimited,” a program that engaged youth through videos tackling prevention strategies for sexual activity, teen pregnancy, AIDS and other STDs. Her passion now is her Tomorrow’s Journey program she founded in 2014. Its mission is to expose girls to a world beyond their immediate experiences and raising expectations of what they can accomplish.

But Lisa Schroeder, best known as the owner of Mother’s Bistro, is the 2024 Remarkable Woman in this region. She has been called “The Mother of all Mothers.” Over 2 decades, Mother’s Bistro had great success while she dealt with personal tragedy. She’s survived the pandemic and the repeated vandalism of recent years.

She continued to find ways to give hope to help lift a city in turmoil. But being a civic force in Portland was not always her plan.

Lisa Schroeder donated food during the pandemic, overcame the vandals, was on Governor Kotek’s governor’s task force for downtown Portland, was named the Oregon Small Businessperson of the Year — and is raising her twin grandsons.

For all of that, Lisa Schroeder was chosen as this area’s Remarkable Woman. he will travel to Hollywood from April 7-9 to meet the other Nexstar Remarkable Women, one of whom will be chosen as the most remarkable in the US.
