Louisville Lions Club held their first community event since the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown began with a fireworks display celebrating Independence Day.

The annual fireworks show at the Jefferson County Recreation Department will start at dark Monday, July 4. Sponsored by the Louisville Lions Club, this year's event will feature the band RC Drifters. The display will be put on by the Louisville Fire Department whose chief, James Davis, is a licensed pyrotechnician.

"We will be selling chips, hot dogs, hamburgers, drinks, candy, glow in the dark necklaces, wands, sparklers," Davis said, adding they try to have items for boys and girls.

There is no fee to watch the fireworks. Length of display will last around 20 minutes.

The Louisville Lions Club will announce the winner of a gun raffle. To purchase a ticket for the raffle, see any Lions Club member.

The fireworks cost more than $7,000, Davis said.

Mitchell McGraw, county commission chairman and a Lion, said last year, hundreds of people watched the fireworks.

"It's just an opportunity to bring people together," he said.

McGraw said people come from outside Louisville to see the fireworks. A man who doesn't want to be named has given the chairman $250, $300 to support the event.

"People are so happy (at the fireworks). It's exciting," he said.

"Everybody's welcome," Davis said. "(The Lions Club) always do a wonderful job in everything they do for our community."
