Linganore High teacher wins state award for American history excellence

Aaron Burch, a social studies teacher at Linganore High School, has been named the 2024 Outstanding Teacher of American History for Maryland by the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.

The award honors full-time teachers of history and related fields, such as social studies, government and citizenship education. Eligible teachers can come from public, private and parochial schools in grades 5 through 12.

Burch graduated from West Liberty State University, Slippery Rock University and McDaniel College, according to a news release from Frederick County Public Schools, and has been teaching at Linganore High for more than 22 years.

He has taught almost every course offered in the social studies department at the school and currently focuses on American Studies and Advanced Placement U.S. History.

Burch's students consistently earn high scores, and he is noted for having freshmen students pass the AP U.S. History exam that is regularly taken by juniors and seniors, the press release said.

Brunch co-founded Linganore High's Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society and is a co-advisor. He also is an advisor for multiple other extracurriculars and history activities, such as Model United Nations, the Student Government Association and National History Day.

Burch was chosen as the state award winner from 46 chapters of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution throughout Maryland, according to the FCPS news release. He was recognized by the local Carrollton Manor chapter before advancing to the state level.

He will receive his award on May 18 during the Maryland Society Daughters of the American Revolution's annual convention.
