Watch what it's like to downhill ski like Lindsey Vonn (video)
If you’re reading this right now — and even if you’re not, though I’m not sure how exactly that would work — you’ll probably never know what it was like for Lindsey Vonn to win bronze in what may be her final Winter Olympics medal-worthy run ever.
But thanks to the wonders of modern technology that gave birth to portable cameras, you can get a glimpse of what it’s like to traverse the downhill skiing course at the Jeongseon Alpine Centre in PyeongChang, South Korea.
This first-person video will give you a gripping sense of the twists and turns that took Vonn and her fellow Olympic skiers from top to bottom of the legendary Mount Gariwang, on which South Korea spent untold sums to clear some 58,000 trees from a sacred forest for these Olympics.
Now, if you were to take nearly two minutes to finish the run, as the anonymous skier here did, you wouldn’t have come close to experiencing the thrill of standing on the Olympic podium, as Vonn did on Wednesday. She completed the course in 1:39.69, less than a half-second behind Italy’s Sofia Goggia, who took home the gold. In fact, the skier in the video above would’ve finished dead last in the women’s event had that been an actual attempt.
But at least it looks cool.
