Lindsey Vonn wins bronze medal in downhill in final Olympics

PYEONGCHANG, South Korea – American Lindsey Vonn won a bronze medal in the women’s downhill race Wednesday, capping a comeback from a pair of devastating knee injuries that at one point left her career in question.

Following a mistake-flecked sixth-place finish in the Super-G, Vonn rode a clean line at Jeongseon Alpine Centre, finishing .47 seconds behind gold medalist Sofia Goggia of Italy. Norway’s Ragnhild Mowinckel took silver.

The 33-year-old Vonn, who owns the women’s record for World Cup wins and is on the verge of holding the all-time record, missed the Sochi Games after twice tearing her right ACL. She won gold in downhill and bronze in Super-G at the Vancouver Games, and her bronze in PyeongChang completes a full array of medals.

She’ll have a chance to win one more Thursday, when she and Mikaela Shiffrin, the gold medalist in giant slalom, compete in the alpine combined, which marries the times of a technically difficult slalom run with a speedy downhill run.
