Lindsey Vonn visibly frustrated after not medaling in Super-G

Eight years after her breakout performance at the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver, where she took home gold in Downhill and bronze in Super-G, Lindsey Vonn made her return to Olympic competition. However her chance at a medal in the women’s Super-G was over by the time she’d finished her run.

Vonn’s run was going according to plan until the very end when she skidded out, nearly crashing, and losing the valuable time that she needed for a chance at the podium in the process. Her disappointment was visible upon crossing the finish line. For her, iti wasn’t just the medal that was on the line. As one of Team USA’s biggest stars, Vonn has been profiled throughout the Games and has frequently referenced her late grandfather as her biggest motivation.

“I want so badly to do well for him, and I miss him so much,” Vonn said at a press conference last week. “I wish he was here and able to watch me, but I know he’s watching. I’m going to win for him.”

In an emotional Instagram post earlier in the day, she reiterated that she would be competing for him.

Vonn will get another shot at a medal for her grandfather and her country during Wednesday’s downhill competition, in which she’s the favorite to take home the gold and will notably oppose USA teammate Mikaela Shiffrin.
