Linda Haney wins third available seat on Firestone Board of Trustees

Apr. 15—Linda Haney has won the third available seat on the Firestone Board of Trustees, according to the town's official election results.

When the town posted the unofficial results on April 2, it was clear that Trustee Don Conyac had won the mayoral race and Lorna Morton and Ray Byrd had secured two of the three trustee seats that were up for election. What was unclear, though, was who would claim the third trustee seat as just two votes separated Haney (766 votes) and Bobby Matthews (764 votes).

Once the official results were posted on April 12, Haney's lead over Matthews had grown to six votes, which did not meet the threshold necessary for a mandatory recount.

Military and overseas voters, along with those who needed to cure missing or invalid signatures, had until April 11 to return their ballots.

"I'm thankful to the residents who voted for me and want to ensure their voices are heard and respected, as well as the Firestone Code," Haney said in a written statement Monday.

Nine candidates ran for three available seats on the Firestone Board of Trustees as part of the town's April 2 election.

Once the new Board of Trustees is seated April 24, it will need to appoint someone to complete the remainder of Conyac's trustee term, which does not expire until April 2026.

"Filling the open trustee seat is a board decision, and my personal feeling is that since we just had the election, it should go to the person with the highest votes to show residents they are not discounted but heard," Haney said. "This is one reason I ran, for citizen advocacy."

In an email Monday, Matthews congratulated all of the candidates who won seats and said the results reflected the "will of the citizens of Firestone."

Matthews went on to say that he had emailed board members to inform them that he is "willing and able to fill the final two years of (Conyac's) term," but he acknowledged that the appointment is entirely the board's decision.

"I would hope that they would follow the will of the people and appoint me to fill that position," Matthews said.
