Limestone County EDA, Athens-Limestone Chamber accepting scholarship applications

LIMESTONE COUNTY, Ala (WHNT) — The Limestone County Economic Development Association (LCEDA) and the Athens-Limestone County Chamber of Commerce are accepting applicants for their 2024 scholarship program.

The two organizations are offering scholarships to Limestone County residents who are pursuing a degree in advanced manufacturing, construction, healthcare, or information technology. The deadline to apply is March 22, 2024.

LCEDA said the funds for the scholarships are raised through its annual golf tournament at Canebrake Club and a Night Out at Toyota Feild which is hosted by both the EDA and the Chamber

LCEDA President and CEO Bethany Shockney said the scholarships are meant to help workforce development in the county and a way for local businesses to give back to the county by investing in future workers.

“These funds allow companies to give back into their future workforce by providing scholarships to local high school seniors as well as those who are going back for additional education,” she said. “It is so rewarding to see people achieve their goals and receive good paying jobs right here in Limestone County.”

Shockney said the scholarships are also a good way to incentivize students to stay in their home communities after college.

“A lot of times when students go off to school, they kind of look for other places to go. But we want, them to know that we have jobs available here,” she said. “And so hopefully that if we are able to give them a scholarship from, their own community, from organizations in their area that they’re familiar with, that they would be willing to come back and give back as well, by taking some of these jobs.”
