LIMESTONE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) – The Alabama Department of Corrections said Monday that an inmate serving a life sentence was pronounced dead at Limestone County Correctional Facility on Saturday.

The inmate, 39-year-old Samuel Sirvoy Ward, was found unresponsive in his dorm as a result of an apparent inmate-on-inmate assault, according to ADOC.

Ward was taken to the Health Care Unit where he died from his injuries. An autopsy will determine the cause of death.

ADOC said they are investigating the death, and two suspects have been identified.

Ward was convicted of attempted murder after shooting two Huntsville Police Department officers in December 2011. He was sentenced to life in prison, as well as an additional 20 years for assault.

When he was convicted, Ward was already serving time for second-degree assault against another HPD officer in 2010.
