WAYNE COUNTY, Ohio (WJW) — Apple Creek is in the heart of NE Ohio Amish country where travelers check out the homemade quilts and the beauty fall foliage.

But, severe thunderstorms triggered intense lightning that lit up the night sky from Lake Erie to the countryside of Wayne County where firefighters said a large home sustained heavy damage after a suspected lightning strike caused a fire.

Firefighters arrived at the home on S. Swinehart Road just before 10 p.m. Thursday where Fire Chief Jim Zimmerman said, “Crews arrived to find a heavily involved single family dwelling with fire through the roof and consuming the entire attic space of the home, as well as fire in the basement.”

Photos from the Apple Creek Fire Department show the top of the home and its roof heavily damaged and gutted in some sections.

“Preliminary findings indicate that the fire was likely caused by a lightning strike. Fortunately, the owners of the home had recently moved out, the structure was vacant and no one was injured,” Zimmerman said.
