The Lighter Side of Sex Addiction
Today in show business news: A new movie tackles sex addiction through comedy, Independence Day 2 (and 3) just got a little more Goldblum-y, and Keira Knightley is going to be a typist.

Here's the first trailer for the romantic comedy (sorta?) Thanks for Sharing, about a man (Mark Ruffalo) who is in recovery for sex addiction when he meets a nice lady (Gwyneth Paltrow) who might be the one. But his addiction is a problem, obviously! Sex addiction is also problem in the B story, about a subway groper (Josh Gad) trying to clean himself up with the help of a sassy fellow sex addict (Pink — excuse me, Alecia Moore). The movie does at least look semi-serious, but a lot of it is comedy! Which is a little peculiar. Shame it is not, it seems. That's OK, even terrible things can have their funny moments, but making a little joke out of Gad's character sexually assaulting someone on the subway is odd. So I'm just going to assume that this is merely the tone of the trailer and not the actual film. Beyond that, though, this looks like a glossy, ultimately feel-good romantic comedy, and who doesn't like those? As long as it's not New Year's Eve or Valentine's Day, of course. And this doesn't look like that. It's written and directed by the guy who wrote The Girl Next Door, which is a surprisingly good little movie. But yeah. Touchy subject. Pun intended? I don't even know anymore.

It seems that both Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman will be returning for the two planned Independence Day sequels. Director Roland Emmerich has confirmed that they will be back in some capacity, bustin' more alien heads and whatnot. The movies are mostly going to concern a "younger generation" fighting the aliens, who come back for revenge I guess, but Pullman and Goldbum will be involved somehow. Maybe as winking cameos? Maybe as actual parts? There's no way of knowing, really. What we can be sure of is that there is not going to be any Will Smith, and whoever they get to play the hero will probably have been born in the goddamned '90s. Sigh. [Vulture]

Keira Knightley is going to produce and star in a movie adaptation of the novel The Other Typist, a drama about "a lonely and isolated typist in a police precinct, who strikes up a friendship with a beautiful and mysterious co-worker who introduces her to the glamorous and forbidden underworld of 1920s New York." That sounds fun! Who wouldn't like wide-eyed Keira Knightley having some sort of awakening? Carey Mulligan, maybe. But that's it. Everyone else is probably "sign me up" about this. Uh oh. Fans of Awkward. might be in for a bumpy ride. The show's creator Lauren Iungerich has announced that she's leaving at the end of the season and never coming back. That's it. Personal and professional reasons, apparently. So what does that mean for Awkward. season four? I have to admit that haven't been keeping up with the show — "have to admit"? What am I talking about? A 30-year-old man should freely admit that he does not watch Awkward., it should be assumed, in fact — so I don't know where things are right now, but did Jenna end up with Matty yet? Because that's all that really needs to happen for the show to end satisfyingly, right? If that's already happening or is going to happen by the end of this season, then just shut it down. What else could or needs to happen? Nothing. That's what I say. Absolutely nothing. But, again, I have not been watching. Because it is a show for teenagers. And I am not a teenager. [TV Line]
If you were feeling sad for actor Steven Pasquale after his Jekyll & Hyde show Do No Harm bombed so catastrophically, weep no more. He has been saved. He will be starring alongside Broadway great Kelli O'Hara in a new musical based on... Bridges of Madison County. Oh. Hm. Well. It could be worse. Pasquale is a good thirty years younger than Clint Eastwood was when he made the movie, but whatever. This is Broadway. Different rules. The show will be opening early next year, with music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown. Which is interesting! He's quite good. So maybe there is hope for this schmaltzy thing. Sweet Christmas. The Hills is alive. MTV is going to air a special "alternate ending" to the series on August 9 at 11:30 in the morning. It's part of the network's "Retro MTV Brunch" programming bloc. Which, wait. Let's forget the whole thing about how does a reality show have an alternate ending and focus on the truly important thing here: The Hills is "retro"???? Nope. No. I refuse. It ended like three years ago. That is contemporary. Recent, at least. Come on, MTV. Retro? The Hills? No. Be fair. Don't be mean. The Grind is retro. Maybe. "I want my MTV" is retro. I will give you that. But not The Hills. Not for another twenty years. Don't throw that word around so lightly. Or else I'm really gonna stop watching Awkward. instead of just lying about stopping watching it in blog posts. [TV Line]
Speaking of MTV, the network has canceled comedy wunderkind Bo Burnham's show Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous after one season. A shame. But, y'know what? The kid's 22. He'll be fine. [Deadline]
