Lighter, Less Expensive Lamborghini Huracan LP 580-2 Unveiled
The term “value Lamborghini” comes off an instant oxymoron, like “generous airline” or “In-N-Out kale salad.” Yet today, the Italian supercar purveyor revealed a new budget offering, one that’s a little down on power, but not likely fun.
Dubbed the Lamborghini Huracan 580-2, the new entry in the Huracan line uses the same 5.2-liter V-10 engine and seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, albeit turned down a step from the Huracan 610-4 to 572 hp and 393 lb-ft of peak torque. Instead of driving all four wheels, this Huracan only powers its rear set; and while mostly similar visually, uses its front fascia to introduce a larger set of air intakes
Even with a 72-lb. weight reduction, the 580-2 will be a touch slower, with a 0-62 mph time of 3.4 seconds, versus a sub-3 second dash for the full-power Huracan, and a top speed that stops at 199 mph. Yet Lamborghini promises the entry-level car will have a bit more spirit, with a stiffer suspension and electronics tuning that helps the tail wag in true rear-wheel-drive fashion.
For $201,100—about $40,000 less than the previous price of entry to Huracan ownership—Lamborghini will not likely face too many difficulties in finding buyers. And those buyers should bone up on the history of rear-wheel-drive Lamborghinis and the exuberance of first-time drivers, lest they learn that “overlooked Lamborghini crash” may be among the most durable of oxymorons.
