Light snowfall is expected overnight in the Milwaukee area, but it won't stick around

The Milwaukee area is expected to experience light snowfall overnight — but it's not going to stick around, according to the National Weather Service in Sullivan.

Precipitation will be slow to develop Sunday evening, after a rain/snow mix is expected to start around midnight, said Ben Miller, a meteorologist with the NWS.

The rain/snow mix will transition to snow for a couple of hours, according to Miller.

"We're looking at pretty minimal snowfall amounts," Miller said.

The western suburbs could see ½ to 1½ inches of snow. Less snow accumulation is expected closer to the lakeshore.

"The high temperature tomorrow is in the low 40s, so the vast majority of that is going to melt," Miller said. "Whatever does fall, it's not going to stick around."

As the night goes on, temperatures will rise and the snow will transition to rain, Miller said. During the transition, there could be a brief period of sleet or freezing rain.

The precipitation is expected to end early Monday morning.

There's another chance for light snow in the area on Tuesday afternoon, according to Miller.

Beyond the Milwaukee area

As of midday Sunday, the National Weather Service said central and northeast Wisconsin could get a few hours of medium to heavy snow overnight Sunday, with lighter stuff expected further south.

Snow totals in central and northeast Wisconsin were expected to be between 2 and 4 inches, while less than 2 inches was expected further south.

In central and northeast parts of the state, snow may be followed by freezing drizzle Monday morning, the weather service said. Winds in those regions could gust up to 35 mph.

A weather advisory is scheduled to take effect at midnight, stressing caution to commuters.
