How to Choose a Paint Color for a Brown Roof

To properly select a paint color for a brown roof, look at the brown undertones present. Mary Gordon, vice president at InSite Builders & Remodeling, explains that the best way to do this is to compare one of your roof shingles to something that is pure white.

If your shingle appears yellowish or beige next to the white and therefore has warm undertones, Gordon recommends going with a red, orange, or yellow paint color. On the other hand, a roof with cool undertones, which will appear blue or gray next to the white paint, will look best alongside blue, gray, or green.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Paint Color for a Brown Roof

Once you have evaluated the brown undertones present on your roof, there are a few other considerations that you will want to take into account before settling on a color; these are detailed below.

Home Design

The style of your home will determine the paint color that you may wish to use alongside a brown roof. The approach you may decide to take will likely vary on whether your home is traditional in style or contemporary.

Michael Winn, the founder of Winn Design + Build, notes that in regard to traditional homes, a conservative palette of earth tones or warm whites may be the best complement for a brown roof.

"In contrast, contemporary homes offer the flexibility to experiment with bold contrasts or subdued, monochromatic schemes that highlight the roof as a feature," he says.

Surrounding Environment

It is important to also look at the surrounding environment when selecting a color to complement your brown roof.

"A house set in a lush, green landscape might call for colors that blend harmoniously with nature, such as sage greens or soft beiges, creating a serene and cohesive look," Winn says.

Alternatively, when dealing with an urban setting, one may wish to select a color that will help the home to stand out from its surroundings.

Desired Aesthetic

Finally, the paint color you select to complement your brown roof should of course reflect your personal design aesthetic.

Whether you prefer a cozy appearance or something sleek will shape your choices.

"These considerations ensure that the house not only looks appealing but also feels like a true reflection of those who call it home," Winn says.
