Hiker Learns Golden Rule Of Bike Trails The Hard Way

Mountain bikers and hikers often have to share trails. However, bike parks offer an experience where riders need not worry about other trail users. Unfortunately, sometimes accidents happen.

In this video, that was posted to Reddit, a rider was riding down a fast section of trail when he rounded a bend to see some hikers. He slammed on the brakes in the loose dirt but was unable to stop without crashing off the trail. Thankfully, He was fine and was riding the next day.

Generally, hikers and bikers have mutual responsibility for interactions. On multi-use trails, both hikers and riders are responsible for being aware and sharing the trail.

In a lift-accessed bike park like Kicking Horse, however, hikers are not allowed on the trails. Northern Lights, where this crash occurred, is listed on Trailforks as e-bike and mountain bike only.

With that said resorts in the summer have a lot going on. Kicking Horse advertises hiking in the same area as Northern Lights. See both the hiking and mountain biking maps below to get an idea of the overlap, especially in the zone shaded red on lookers right, where this interaction took place.

This likely was not a scenario where the hikers were blatantly poaching, they probably got turned around.

The hikers certainly learned their lesson. This video serves as a warning to read signs and follow bike park rules for everyone’s safety.
