The show is based on Manhunt by James Swanson, which details the events of April 14, 1865 (Lincoln's assassination) to April 26, 1865 (John Wilkes Booth's death). Like the book, Manhunt will focus in on these twelve days.

The show stars Tobias Menzies as War Secretary Edwin Stanton (the man who leads the search for Booth), Hamish Linklater as President Abraham Lincoln, and Anthony Boyle as Booth. In addition, Lovie Simone plays Mary Simms, a formerly enslaved person who plays a pivotal role in the story; Lili Taylor portrays First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln; and Matt Walsh plays Dr. Samuel Mudd, a slaveowner who aided Booth's escape.

"I can guarantee that people will be wanting the next episode, will be wanting to know: What happened next in my history? Because I thought I knew, but I had no idea," Linklater tells T&C.

The first two episodes premiered today on Apple TV+, and the next five episodes will drop weekly on Fridays, through the finale of Manhunt on April 19, 2024. Apple TV+ typically drops new episodes at midnight eastern time, so Manhunt episodes will make perfect Friday night viewings this spring.
