For better or worse and usually for bitter, we’re obsessed with Gen Z; their slang, eating habits, three-hour showers, work ethic, skincare routines, limited understanding of the tax process, disinterest in driving, and perhaps most especially, their sexual proclivities.

Research reveals more than half of Gen Zers – adults born between 1995 and 2008- are seeking nontraditional romantic partnerships with 59% reporting that their ideal scenario is an open or polyamorous relationship.

In addition, a recent survey released by the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) revealed that 28% of Gen Z identified as part of the LGBTQ community. In contrast (cough repression) only about 16% of millennials, 7% of Generation X, and 4% of baby boomers identify as LGBTQ.

Why is Gen Z more sexually free than generations that came before? Blame it on the placement of death daddy planet Pluto in freewheeling, good timing Sagittarius.

Pluto = burn the old to make way for the new

Named for the god of the underworld, Pluto governs our primordial impulses; sex, death, reckoning, etc.

An outer planet, Pluto’s orbit is an arduously long 248 years and because it only changes signs once every twelve to thirty years it rules an entire generation. Uranus and Neptune are also outer/generational planets that shape the energy of the collective but Pluto, as the planet of the sexual and the subconscious, shows us the drives and desires that define it.

The unfolding of Pluto’s saga takes time, and only when a generation matures are we able to see how the planet plays its hand. Now that Gen Z is casting votes, making its voice heard, getting it on, and commanding with purchase power we can see the ways Pluto is coming through.

As the final planet in our solar system, Pluto is rightly linked to endings and downfalls. Pluto dismantles the structures of the old to make way for the new world order; we can blame the dwarf planet for the ire and eye rolls that exist on both sides of the generational divide.

Beyond the Greco-Roman pantheon and according to Richard Tarnas, Pluto is associated with, “the Hindu deity Shiva, god of destruction and creation, and Kali and Shakti, goddesses of erotic power and elemental transformation.”

In-kind and kindling, the sign that Pluto occupies in the birth charts of a generation indicates on a grand scale how sex and power will be wielded, understood, and cast in contrast to the past.

In typical iconography, Kali carries a severed head symbolizing liberation, and a sword which equates to the power of knowledge to destroy ignorance. Fittingly, Pluto urges us to piss off our predecessors and push forward and onward in the name of progress.

Pluto in Sagittarius

Apropos of being deemed the ‘me generation’ Boomers were born when Pluto was in Leo, early Gen Xers with their elitist fears of ‘selling out’ were born when Pluto was in the ‘death to the inauthentic’ sign of Virgo. Late Gen Z folks are ruled by Pluto in Libra and Millennials by Pluto in the investigate everyone, trust no one sign of Scorpio.

From 1995-2008, Pluto set up shop in the mutable, rock n’ roll, flippant AF fires of Sagittarius. Ruled by Jupiter, a planet of expansion and excess.

Sag is synonymous with optimism, adventure, idealism, rebellion, the pursuit of truth, and love of the novel. In terms of effect, this can be understood as Gen Z expanding our idea of what is possible, permissible, and pleasurable.

Praise be.

The Plutonian effects of Gen Z are poised to be more powerful than those of their forebearers as they are the largest generation, constituting 32 percent of the global population and surpassing millennials and boomers, respectively.

Concerning sex and expansion, Gen Z is redefining virginity, normalizing polyamory, and rejecting the binary of sexual labeling.

As The Post explains, “Many Zoomers believe virginity has been used as a tool to shame and police people’s sexual activity for centuries — and they’re eager to do away with the concept.”

Herein lies the crux of Pluto in Sagittarius, burning tradition and the established order to break ground for what they deem a better way of being. See Gen Z putting email, the 9-to-5 workweekhappy hours, and one-night stands to the cultural guillotine. And slow claps and loud cheer for championing conversations around consent and for valuing physical and mental boundaries.

Incendiary, expressive, and a bit of a soapbox orator, Sagittarius is the outspoken teenager, hell-bent on pushing agendas, flying freak fags, and culling or canceling the old or the status quo.

Sag also venerates knowledge (see Gen Z rallying to save libraries) the wisdom of experience and easy money so if said elders are worthy, they will entertain an age-gap relationship.

Yes indeed, yes Daddy.

This teenage energy of Pluto in Sag is further amplified by the reality that more Gen Zers live at home with their parents than any previous generation in history, with 54% not leaving the nest. This has led to a phenomenon known as ‘home blocking’ wherein kids can’t get their kicks and kinks because their parents are looming.

More curious than cautious, Sagittarius seeks to understand through first-hand encounter and for all their rebelliousness can be inflexible about the ideologies they champion. Sagittarius is flippant about what it deems unnecessary, offensive, or old hat, using humor to subvert and ridicule to rule.

Enter ‘ok, boomer.’

Pluto intensifies everything it touches, oft to an extreme degree. The planet of seismic change does not move in small or subtle ways, especially in a Jupiter-ruled sign. On its worst day, Jupiter is an aggrandizing blowhard, a quality that lends itself to the not-so-sunny stereotypes of Gen Z.

Yet, many of the extremes that Gen Z has gone to have proven to be in service of a larger shift toward sexual inclusivity and transparency, a world where labels are arbitrary, and safer, broader, better, and more equitable f—ing is celebrated and for that, we salute you…and may the gods you entertain help you when Generation Alpha comes of age and rage.
