Life-saving power of blood donation hits home for Utah Red Cross executive director
LINDON, Utah (ABC4 Utah) – Every day at the American Red Cross we share the need for and importance of blood donation and its ability to save lives, but when that need hits home it becomes even more meaningful. Executive Director Benjamin Donner has experienced the need for blood first-hand on three different occasions. Once with his father, once with himself needing blood, and most recently his 5-year- nephew Quinn. (#Quinner_the_Winner)
In January of this year, his family received the shattering news that his nephew Quinn was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor along his spine called neuroblastoma. The treatments will be intense including chemotherapy, surgeries, blood marrow transplants, and many blood transfusions.
• In recent weeks, the Red Cross has seen an encouraging increase in the collection of blood products, but blood and platelet donation appointments remain vital this month to ensure hospital shelves can be replenished as soon as possible.
• Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs a blood transfusion. In fact, 1 in 7 patients entering a hospital will need a blood transfusion.
• ·A sufficient blood supply is critical to being able to provide timely care for all patients relying on lifesaving blood products. It’s the blood on the shelves that helps in times of emergency.
This kind of diagnosis is not something a family ever chooses and is never ready for. Quinn’s family needs our support more than ever. We always want to help, and in situations like this we are unsure how.
