LG reportedly prepping first Windows Phone 8 handset

Microsoft can use all the help it can get right now. Nearly three years following its launch, Windows Phone’s share of the global smartphone market now sits at just 3.2%, according to market research firm IDC. Nokia’s new $650 Lumia 1020 is an impressive camera phone, but the odds of it helping Microsoft’s cause likely aren’t good — at least not until the price comes down. What may help, however, is getting more vendors on board with Windows Phone 8, and LG is currently working on its first Windows Phone 8 smartphone, according to a recent report.

Light Reading India quotes LG’s Managing Director for the Indian market Soon H Kwon in saying that his company is currently developing a Windows Phone 8 device. “At home (South Korea), we are actually working on our Windows Phone 8 OS powered smartphone,” Kwon reportedly said. He noted that LG has not yet committed to launching the device, though.

Kwon also made it clear that despite the companies efforts with Windows Phone, Android remains its core focus for the time being. “Android is the major platform globally, given its acceptance and penetration,” Kwon said. “Although, we believe that Windows will pick up going ahead, as Microsoft is pumping efforts into it.”
