Lexington Catholic and LCA girls win big at inaugural KHSAA indoor state track meet

The girls track teams from Lexington Catholic and Lexington Christian were two of the big winners at the inaugural KHSAA Indoor Track & Field State Championships held in Louisville on Saturday and Sunday.

With teams broken into three classes, just as they are for the longstanding outdoor event that will continue to be held at the end of each school year, Lexington Catholic and LCA took home first place in their respective girls team standings in Class A and 2A after outstanding performances by a number of their athletes at the Norton Sports & Learning Center.

This was the first statewide indoor track and field meet sanctioned by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association.

Lexington Christian’s girls track team, led by Coach Tom Stickel, back row, third from right, took first place in the Class A team standings at the inaugural KHSAA Indoor Track & Field State Championships held at Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center in Louisville on Sunday.

Racing in Sunday afternoon’s Class A competition, Lexington Christian’s Annie Sewell won the 800-meter dash in 2:21.47 and anchored LCA’s winning 4x800-meter relay that also included Jenna Raye Hopper, Violet Griese and June Karls. LCA’s Kennedy Moughamian won the 3,000-meter event in 10:37.44.

Among Central Kentucky athletes competing in Class A, Paris sprinter Briley Cline won the 60- (7.66) and 200-meter dashes (24.74), while Frankfort’s Katie Norman took the 400 (59.06).

Racing in Saturday afternoon’s Class 2A competition, the Knights’ Joanna Bryant took first in four events as she led off the winning 4x800- and 4x400-meter relays and won the 200- and 400-meter sprints (in times of 26.45 and 59.33, respectively).

Teammate Caroline Beiting, a state record-holder in last year’s outdoor 800, won the 800- (2:19.25) and 1500-meter (4:45.96) races Saturday in addition to anchoring the winning 4x800-meter relay.

LexCath’s 4x800 also included Cate Conklin and Abigail Turner and finished in a time of 9:50.55, almost 40 seconds faster than second place Corbin. The Knights’ 4x400 relay led by Bryant also featured Ally Nowlin, Taylor Riordan and Kelly Lennon and finished at 4:08.66, more than nine seconds faster than second-place Bourbon County.

Lexington Catholic’s fourth-place boys team got a boost from Kaylib Nelson, who won both the 60- (6.87) and 200-meter dashes (21.61).

Covington Catholic won the boys team competition in Class 2A.

Among Central Kentucky athletes competing in Class 2A, Bourbon County’s Ava Hernandez won the pole vault with a best mark of 11 feet. Franklin County’s Mariah Jackson and Tazyriah Miley finished 1-2 in the 60-meter hurdles with times of 9.72 and 9.78, respectively.

Two Lexington athletes took top marks in Class 3A’s field events. Bryan Station’s Bryson Carpenter won the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 6 inches.

Henry Clay’s Hollyn Renfro won the girls pole vault by clearing 11 feet, 6 inches on her first attempt. West Jessamine’s Abby Rexford matched that height on her third try, but neither could top 12 feet, which gave the title to Renfro.

West Jessamine’s Aly Doyle won both the girls 60-meter hurdles (9.15) and the long jump (18-04.50 feet) while George Rogers Clark’s Joey Hill claimed the boys long jump (21-06.75 feet) and triple jump (43-04.50 feet).
