Lewis Hamilton would like some input in designing Miami's F1 track
Reigning Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton is not a fan of the proposed layout for the Miami Grand Prix.
Miami and Formula 1 are working to bring an race to the city in 2019 and a track layout has even been released. The layout features a loop around the American Airlines Center in downtown Miami and two long stretches where drivers will be flat out from downtown across the bay to an area near the city’s port.
Hamilton would like to offer his opinion on possible changes to the track. From his Thursday press conference ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix via Motorsport.com:
“I don’t get why, for example, in golf you get all the great golfers who design golf courses, and then you’ve not got any of the top racing drivers ever in history who ever designed a race track,” Hamilton said.
“Not that we’re designers or anything, but [we’ve not been asked for] our input or anything like that.
“Miami is a super cool place, and I was very, very excited to hear about it, and then I saw the layout.
“I think it could be a lot more fun. You’ve got two of the longest straights, but maybe when we drive it, it will be more fun.
The Miami City Commission is set to vote to approve negotiations for a 10-year deal on Thursday. If the race goes ahead, the promoter would be a company owned by Miami Dolphins’ owner Stephen Ross.
A Miami F1 race would be held in October of 2019 and be the second Formula 1 race in the United States along with the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas.
