Letter to the editor: Many witnesses to bullying

Re: your April 24 story, “Ventura councilmember wasn’t bullied, report says”:

I have known Liz Campos for 24 years, living in the Ventura Avenue neighborhood for the entire time, and I can attest that if Liz said it happened, it is the truth. She is a person who chooses her words carefully and acts wisely in all her endeavors.

I know it to be fact, that Liz began complaining to the city regarding (former acting city manager) Mr. Akbar Alikhan’s abusive behavior toward her within weeks of being sworn in as a councilmember. She and I were on Main Street in the closed area one day in February 2023 when the then acting city manager was passing. I asked him when Liz would have a safe ramp to the dais at City Hall for meetings. He looked at her and asked if I was her “watchdog.” She told him, “She is just a friend who understands the importance of access barrier removal. That ramp is really too steep for my wheelchair.” Mr. Alikhan angrily said, “So resign, I don’t need you there.”

Liz was quiet for the rest of the time we were having lunch that day and admitted to me that Mr. Alikhan refuses to discuss the access barriers. I suggested she speak to HR or the city attorney. In late March or early April 2023, Liz’s wheelchair got broken backing down the very steep ramp to the council chamber’s dais.

I witnessed this and its effect on Liz’s ability to function fully at city meetings. Liz continues to speak up and to vote for the needs of the residents of Ventura, even in a city that refuses to provide her access and accommodation for her disability.

There are many witnesses to Mr. Alikhan’s bullying of Liz and city employees under his watch. The article should be retracted.
