Letter carriers' food drive set for Saturday

May 9—Meridian and Lauderdale County residents can help the less fortunate in their communities have a good meal as the National Association of Letter Carriers holds its annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive Saturday.

The food drive, which began in 1993, is a one-day, nationwide event to collect nonperishable foods to fill food banks throughout the country. Held each year on the second Saturday in May, the effort has collected about 1.9 billion pounds of food since it began, according to the National Association of Letter Carriers.

To participate in the food drive, residents are encouraged to place a bag of nonperishable food near their mailbox Saturday for letter carriers to collect. The donated items will be disbursed to food pantries throughout East Mississippi and West Alabama including Love's Kitchen, Wesley House, The Salvation Army, The Samaritan, which is located in Waynesboro, and Livingston, Alabama's Children of the Village.

All donations are appreciated, however the pantries are particularly in need of sweet peas, lima beans, black-eyed peas, canned fruits and diced tomatoes.
