Let’s-a-go! First-ever Super Nintendo World plane lands at Salt Lake Airport

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — The Salt Lake City International Airport had a special visitor touchdown this week. You might recognize him with his iconic mustache and red hat — it’s Mario, one of Nintendo‘s most popular characters.

In a social media post, the SLC Airport announced that a Spirit Airlines plane, featuring an aircraft wrap of the well-loved video game character, made a stop in Utah on Tuesday, March 12.

Spirit Airlines said that this Super Nintendo World-themed Airbus A320neo is the first of its kind. It was created in collaboration with Spirit Airlines and Universal Studios Hollywood as Super Nintendo World hit its one-year anniversary since opening at the theme park.

According to Spirit Airlines, the special-edition aircraft first took to the skies on Feb. 21 from Detroit, Michigan, to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and will continue flying to destinations throughout May.

SLC Airport spokesperson Nancy Volmer said Tuesday was the first time the Super Nintendo World plane landed there.

Spirit Airlines recently posted a behind-the-scenes look at how the video game-themed plane came together on Instagram.

For the anniversary, Spirit Airlines is also holding a sweepstakes to win a four-person, two-night trip to Super Nintendo World. Entries are accepted through March 20.
