Actor, philanthropist, flat cap-enthusiast and keen environmentalist, Leonardo DiCaprio is becoming as well known for his green-friendly activism (just don't mention the yachts) as he is for his work on screen, but his latest planet-loving move might surprise you a bit.

Because they're burgers.

Burgers that will save the world!

Apparently...

That's because Leonardo DiCaprio has been announced as both an advocate and investor in Beyond Meat, an American startup that is creating affordable, sustainable plant-based burgers that are actually made out of a mix of peas, beetroot, coconut oil and potato starch.

Hmmmm.

"Livestock production is a major contributor to carbon emissions. Shifting from animal meat to the plant-based meats developed by Beyond Meat is one of the most powerful measures someone can take to reduce their impact on our climate," Leo said in a press release. "The company's ability to create healthy meat directly from plants will go a long way in helping everyday consumers take action on climate change."

Joining the likes of Bill Gates and Twitter co-founders Biz Stone and Evan Williams, Leo will be hoping to make a dent in the estimated 1.5 billion methane-producing cows that make up a large part of the animal agriculture industry, which itself reportedly creates 18 percent of greenhouse emissions annually.

Leo recently hit out at President Trump for his "astounding level of wilful ignorance and inaction" when it comes to climate change, while his foundation also pledged $20 million in environmental grants "before it's too late".

Better start eating those taaaaasty pea burgers then.
