Lengthy I-57 bridge projects start Friday in Champaign Co.

CHAMPAIGN CO., Ill. (WCIA) – Two long-term Interstate 57 construction projects are starting in Champaign County tomorrow to replace bridges, the Illinois Department of Transportation announced.

One project will take place in Pesotum on the I-57 bridges over U.S. 45. The construction is expected to last until December 2025. During this time, I-57 will be reduced to one lane in each direction, in addition to occasional lane closures on U.S. 45 as work continues.

The second project involves replacing the County Highway 17 bridge over I-57. This location is east of Sadorus. IDOT officials said the construction is also set to last until Dec. 2025, and that CH 17 will be fully closed over I-57 until then. I-57 will also be reduced to one lane both ways throughout the duration of the project, and will be subject to some full overnight closures.

IDOT officials said motorists should expect delays in these areas and allow extra time for travel. Drivers are urged to drive carefully through work areas and pay close attention to changed conditions, work zone signage, and speed limits. Officials also ask drivers to refrain from using mobile devices.

These construction projects are part of the Rebuild Illinois capital program, which includes upgrading nearly 10 million square feet of bridge deck across the state over the next six years.
