Lehigh Acres man, 21, charged with vehicle homicide in New Year's Eve 2022 fatal crash

Nearly 11 months after a driver allegedly reached triple-digit speeds in a 45 mph zone, causing a three-vehicle crash with a death and two injuries, troopers concluded their probe with an arrest.

Maxcimiliano Zacaria Rodriguez, 21, of Lehigh Acres, remained in custody Thursday morning without bond set. He faces vehicle homicide charges.

Lt. Greg Bueno, spokesperson for the Florida Highway Patrol, said the crash happened shortly after 8 a.m. Dec. 31, 2022, at 2909 Lee Blvd., in Lehigh Acres.

Bueno said the wreck involved three SUVs, two injuries and one death. He said troopers determined Rodriguez, who was driving a 2016 Dodge Durango, was at fault in the crash.

Just before the collision, Bueno said, Rodriguez was traveling as fast as 102 mph in a posted 45 mph zone. Rodriguez was injured in the crash and transported.

The driver of the other SUV, a 2015 Ford Focus, was a 58-year-old Lehigh Acres woman. She was driving a 51-year-old Lehigh Acres man, who was taken to the hospital, where he later died, Bueno said.

The third SUV was parked and unoccupied at the time of crash, Bueno said.

Troopers arrested Rodriguez for vehicular homicide on Tuesday. He's next due in court June 24 for his arraignment.
