Chuck Berry, the pioneering rock and roll musician, has died, police in St. Charles County confirm. He was 90 years old.
In a statement posted to Facebook the Charles County Police Department in Missouri wrote that they responded to a “medical emergency on Buckner Road at approximately 12:40 p.m. (1:40 p.m. ET) today (Saturday, March 18).” That’s where the found Berry, who first responders say was “unresponsive.” Despite administering “lifesaving techniques,” Berry could not be revived. He was pronounced dead at 1:26 p.m. (2:26 p.m. ET)
“The St. Charles County Police Department sadly confirms the death of Charles Edward Anderson Berry Sr., better known as legendary musician Chuck Berry,” the statement reads, adding that his family “requests privacy during this time of bereavement.”
Berry's iconic career spanned seven decades, and included hits like "Roll Over Beethoven" and "Johnny B. Goode." His unique blend of swing and the blues was one of the precursors of rock and roll, and influenced everyone from Elvis Presley to The Rolling Stones. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.
He received a lifetime achievement Grammy in 1984 and was among the first inductees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.
