‘Leave those grandmas alone’: 5-foot gator caught on 104-year-old woman’s property

JACKSONVILLE, Florida (WJW) – Sheriff’s deputies called it a “normal day in Florida” after wrangling an alligator and removing it from an elderly woman’s Jacksonville property.

Officers with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office were called to a 104-year-old woman’s home in the area of Atlantic Boulevard and Art Museum Drive on Monday.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office posted video of the capture on social media, showing officers and a professional trapper carrying the five-foot gator out of the woman’s backyard.

“We can’t cuff him,” one of the officers said with a laugh. “You’re under arrest. You’ve got to leave those grandmas alone.”

Officer Jeff Kopp shared the video on Instagram, calling the gator “quick and mean with razor sharp teeth.”

The sheriff’s office said the alligator is “alive and well” and was released back into the wild.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, alligators can be considered a nuisance if they’re at least four feet long and pose a threat to people or pets. Residents who have concerns can call the Nuisance Alligator Hotline at (866) 392-4286.
