A bull-taming festival in southern India has resulted in the death of at least five people.

The victims were all gored to death by bulls, who were being chased by thousands of men as part of the controversial sport known as Jallikattu.

The men chase bulls to grab prizes that are tied to the specially sharpened horns of the bulls in the contest.

It was previously banned by the Supreme Court in 2014 on animal cruelty grounds but the Indian government lifted the ban last year after protests.

The traditional sport of Jallikattu is over 2,000 years old and sees men try to pluck prizes off the bull while bullfighters hold on the animal’s hump.

The bull is not killed and no weapons are used by the bullfighters.

Hundreds of people have been mauled or injured by the bulls throughout the years, while scores of others have been gored or trampled to death.

Animal rights groups claim the bulls suffer unnecessary stress but the government lifted the ban, stating that Jallikattu was important for the “survival and well-being of the native breed of bulls and preserving cultural traditions”.
