At Least 20 Injured in Explosion Outside Istanbul Stadium (Report)

A suspected car bomb in Istanbul outside of a soccer stadium on Saturday has injured at least 20, according to reports from several outlets including Reuters.

The explosion is suspected to have been targeting riot police and occurred after the end of a match between two teams in Turkey, Reuters reports.

While speaking in parliament, Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu confirmed that around 20 people had been wounded. He also said that a car bomb targeting the police was responsible.

Although it is unclear who is behind the attacks, suspicion is likely to fall on Kurdish guerrilla groups, the BBC reports, considering previous attacks.

Several bombings have occurred in Turkey over the past few years, including in August when three attacks targeting security forces killed 11 and injured nearly 300 others. In October, a car bomb in southeast Turkey exploded outside of a police station killing 18.

The game in the stadium was between two of Turkey’s top teams, Besiktas and Bursaspor. The latter team posted on twitter that no one had identified any injured fans. According to local media, fans had already dispersed by the time the blast occurred.

Photos and videos of the explosion have started to circulate around the internet and on social media.
