2 Students Dead, More Than a Dozen Injured After 15-Year-Old Opens Fire at Kentucky High School: Cops

Shots rang out at Marshall County High School in Benton, Ky., Tuesday morning.

Two students were killed and more than a dozen others were injured as a 15-year-old classmate opened fire Tuesday at a Kentucky high school, authorities said.

Hundreds of students ran for their lives as shots rang out at Marshall County High School in the state's southwest corner. The dead include a boy and girl, both 15, police said.

Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin rushed to the scene from the capital.

Parents abandoned their cars on both sides of a nearby road and ran to find their children.

The alleged shooter is in custody and will face murder and attempted murder charges, the governor said. The assailant's name was not released, nor was a possible motive for the year's first fatal school shooting.

"This is a wound that is going to take a long time to heal," Bevin said. "For some in this community, it will never fully heal."

Fleeing students jumped in their cars and sped from the campus, some not stopping until they reached a McDonald's more than a mile away, The Associated Press reported.

"They was running and crying and screaming," said Mitchell Garland, who provided shelter to between 50 and 100 students inside his nearby business. "They was just kids running down the highway. They were trying to get out of there."

The high school is about 30 minutes from Heath High School in Paducah, where then-14-year-old Michael Carneal opened fire on Dec. 1, 1997, killing three and injuring five.
