‘I learned a lot from him’: Russell Co. Sheriff’s Office scatters ashes of former K-9 officer along highway

RUSSELL COUNTY, Ala. (WRBL) — The Russell County Sheriff’s Office said goodbye to a teammate on Wednesday afternoon.

Lux, a German Shepard K-9 officer, served as a drug and tracking dog at the sheriff’s office for nearly a decade before he had to be put down last week.

In honor of Lux, deputies gathered for a roadside ceremony on U.S. 431 between Seale and Pittsview. Lux’s ashes were scattered along the route, where he worked many traffic stops.

Lux’s death has hit the department hard. He is being remembered as a fine K-9 officer who did his job well.

“I learned a lot from him. At some point, the student becomes the teacher. And that’s exactly what happened,” said Russell County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Brad Evans. “He was a student and I trained him up and then later on he showed me, ‘Trust your dog.'”

Sgt. Evans went on to tell WRBL the “only thing you should do is drive the truck and give the dog its Kong.”

Lux semi-retired from the Russell County Sheriff’s Department about a year ago. He was living with Evans and making the occasional office visit.
