Leak shuts off water to CDOC complex in Cañon City

(CAÑON CITY, Colo.) — The Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) is responding to a water leak that has shut off water service to the East Cañon Complex, impacting thousands of inmates and hundreds of staff members.

The CDOC said it was being assisted by the Colorado State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) to respond to a leak that temporarily shut off water services within the complex. According to Fremont County, the East Cañon Complex consists of the Cañon Minimum Centers, consisting of Levels I & II lower security institutions (Four Mile Correctional Center, Arrowhead Correctional Center, and Skyline Correctional Center), Fremont Correctional Facility, and Centennial Correctional Facility.

“CDOC is prioritizing the safety and well-being of all individuals within the East Canon Complex, including approximately 4,700 inmates and 622 staff members, and implementing immediate measures to address the situation to restore normal water services,” said the CDOC.

The actions being taken include the provision of potable water for drinking and sanitation purposes, the deployment of portable bathroom facilities, and ensuring water access for all affected within the complex. The CDOC said it is collaborating with the SEOC and various government agencies, nonprofits, and local organizations to provide water and additional support to those affected by the water leak.

The CDOC said it anticipates water services to be restored within three to four days. Visitation at the East Cañon Complex is temporarily canceled during this time.
