lconic San Francisco drag bar to remain open for 1 more month after ‘overwhelming’ community support

(KRON) — An iconic San Francisco drag club was set to open its doors for the final time on Sunday, March 31, the International Transgender Day of Visibility. However, due to “overwhelming” support from the community, AsiaSF decided to stay open for one more month.

AsiaSF, located at 201 9th St., will now close on April 28, founder and CEO Larry Hashbarger told KRON4. Hashbarger said the timing works out perfectly because the establishment’s 26th anniversary falls on April 17, which allows them to have a special celebration for the milestone.

“It feels amazing to have so many people come out and support us for all these years,” Hashbarger said. “We have had over a million people through our doors, and I’m talking people all over the world: international tourists, tourists from around the county and of course, everyone from the Bay Area.”

Hashbarger said the closure stemmed from a shift in nightlife patterns since the COVID-19 pandemic.

AsiaSF offers a dinner-and-a-show experience featuring a Vegas-style drag show on a runway stage featuring award-winning Asian cuisine. It has hosted over 1 million patrons since opening in 1998. You can make reservations on AsiaSF’s website.

Despite the closure of the brick-and-mortar location, AsiaSF will still have its presence felt in the Bay Area.

Hashbarger said the business plans to do pop-up performances at various establishments, private events, charity events, etc. One entertainer patrons may see is “Trina” who has been performing for AsiaSF since day one back in 1998.

“We’re so thrilled that she’s still with us,” Hashbarger said, calling her “fine wine” as she has been a stalwart from the very beginning.
