Layton High student comes to school with gun in backpack

LAYTON, Utah (ABC4) — A student at Layton High School is facing two misdemeanor charges after he was allegedly caught with a gun in his backpack on Friday.

Around 10:45 a.m., high school administrators say they received a tip that a student had a gun in their backpack. School officials pulled the student out of class and took him to the office where they allegedly searched and found the gun.

Police say they do not believe the student threatened anyone or had any intentions of using the weapon. It is currently unknown why the student allegedly brought the gun to school or who sent the tip to school administrators.

The student is facing two Class A misdemeanors. Under Utah law, it is illegal to possess a firearm on school premises.
